Christmas is that paradoxical time of the year where everyone both loves and dreads. Whereas Christmas is all about cozy feasts and family dinners, the food bills can add a bit of wear to our wallets, especially for those who are on a budget. Here are a few tips you can heed in order to save money while still having a sumptuous repast.

1. Shop at Aldi

As grocery prices surge over the merry season, knowing where to get your food can save you a tonne of money. When it comes to prices, Aldi is your friend. You’re paying $50 less in Aldi for the same amount of food in Coles or Woolies.

2. Keep it simple

In food, as in everything in life, sometimes less is more. Try simple meals, like a roast dish. Use ingredients that are in season. Trim off the nibbles like chips or peanuts. Doing these things won’t diminish the quality of your feast - Christmas meals can be delicious without costing a fortune.

3. Plan a budget, and stick to it

This is probably the most repeated piece of money advice. But we’ll keep repeating it because it works! A budget will prevent you from unnecessarily dipping into your savings , as long as you stick to it.

4. Buy food on Christmas Eve

Knowing when to buy groceries also saves you a lot of money. You can get huge discounts on grocery if you go shopping on Christmas Eve.

5. Cook fewer dishes but larger quantities

If you’re organising a Christmas feast, try making fewer dishes and spare yourself the trouble of buying heaps of different ingredients. Remember, it’s the quality of the food that matters, not the number of dishes.

6. Ask your guests to BYO or bring a dish

Instead of cooking the whole feast on your own, try organising a potluck dinner. Alternatively, you can ask your guests to bring a drink.

7. Eat out

Sometimes eating out is the simplest and cheapest way to celebrate Christmas. The food can be cheaper, and you don’t have to stress over cooking.
